How OLD SKOOL PIPES GOT STARTED

OLD SKOOL started with the search for the perfect waterpipe. Sitting in the easy chairs for a session an old friend and I began discussing the problems with most water pipes. (This was back in 2002 so pullout style water pipes had not been invented yet.) We discussed how most pipes held on to stale smoke, and bad tastes, either because of the shape, size, or material the water pipes were made of. We discussed if the pipe was too long, most people could not clear all the smoke from the pipe. A bubble seemed to hold some smoke in the nooks out of the main stream of air. Ceramics and acrylics held on to resin smells, ruining the taste experience. We concluded that the perfect pipe would be 9 to 10 inches long, made of glass and perfectly straight and of course have a thumb hole carb.

So I set out to find that perfect pipe.

I went to the major city 40 minutes away to the street that had a lot of smoke shops by the college campus. I parked behind all the stores, ran around front and went from store to store looking for the described pipe. No luck finding it I returned to my car to find it had been towed because I picked a bad parking spot.

After paying a $256.00 impound fee. I go to a local store in my home town and there it is!!!

Of course I bought two of them and took them to show my friend. He and I found it to be the perfect pipe we had talked about. Straight, made of glass and easy to clean. Our friends tried and liked it, and also bought them. everything was great for a while, then the supply dried up. New school glass blowers started making pull out style pipes.

Thumb hole glass pipes became a scarce commodity.

The local store worked hard and found another manufacturer. That lasted another six months and then that manufacturer quit making them as well.

The Goal is to make these perfect pipes available, re-establish Thumb Hole Carb glass pipes for everyone.
